The number one thing I've learned about living a happy and successful life?
STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS.
I struggled with this one for years...and still have to keep myself in check from time to time.
Today, it's super easy to get caught up in our Facebook feeds, Instagram feeds, etc. where we see all kinds of "successful" people. They achieving big milestones, buying houses, starting businesses, etc., etc. Recognize that everyone on Facebook is showing the highlights of their lives, so it feels like every day something amazing is happening to someone you know or follow. That's awesome - nothing wrong with that. But it can be tough not to get swept up and think to yourself: "Wow, this person is doing that or accomplished this...what am I doing with my own life?"
Sit down and think about what's important to you in your life. Make a list of those things and work towards them.
- Maybe to you, success is doing something for work that you love and being able to spend tons of time with family.
- Maybe to you, success is making a certain amount of money.
- Maybe to you, it's getting in shape.
- Maybe to you, it's starting a business and controlling your own destiny.
- Maybe to you, it's learning a new language and traveling the world.
Whatever is important to YOU, write that down and work towards it. If you're progressing towards those things, you should consider yourself successful.
I saw a quote once that said,
"Stop comparing yourself to others and go make some magic yourself."
Remind yourself of this every day, and you'll feel successful. Oh, and your happiness level will be much higher too because you're working towards things YOU care about and not what others care about.
