Unfortunately, there are no randomized trials of weight change with long enough follow-up time to detect changes in event rates and the findings from observational studies range from increased mortality risk after weight gain3,4 to increased risk of mortality5,6 or CHD7,8 after weight loss. Other observational studies have found no association9,10 or reduced risk after intentional weight loss.11,12 Two observational studies found a lower risk of CHD, diabetes and mortality among obese adults that did versus did not undergo bariatric surgery.13,14
