Road noise and strokes

Living within shouting distance of a noisy roadway may increase the risk of stroke appears to predict higher stroke risk, particularly for older adults, Danish researchers found.

Overall stroke risk rose a significant 14 percent for every 10-decibel increase in residential exposure to road traffic noise, but there was a doubling of that increased risk when residents of the roadside dwelling were 65 or older, Dr. Mette Sørensen, of the Danish Cancer Society in Copenhagen, and colleagues reported online in the European Heart Journal.

If that's a causal link, 8 percent of all the strokes and 19 percent of those among older adults in the urban-dwelling adults included in the study might be attributable to the noisy surroundings, the group estimated.
