- Don’t hold a grudge more than half an hour:
As soon as you finish your heated argument, or after dealing with irrational people who put you down, start a 30 minutes timer on your phone. During this 30 minutes let your blood boil before it cools down. You may whine to someone you trust, and scream your frustration out, let your imagination go wild about what should happen to this person who hurt you. But once the 30 minutes timer is over, stop all that. Holding your grudge further would deprive you of healing and give full control to the person who “wronged you” over your life. It is like walking around carrying a bag of toxins that weakens your soul and slowly kills your joy.

- Make someone happy:
Nothing's more rewarding and joyful in life than seeing happiness in someone’s eyes, a child, a neighbor, a friend, or even a complete stranger. To make somebody happy doesn’t cost you a lot of money or requires special skills. Simple acts of kindness will usually suffice. Say you’re an adult who wants to make your mother happy, a weekly visit with a bag of fruit and friendly conversation over a cup of tea would make her day. And if you’re a teenager, just fix your bed every day and help her with some housework.
If you decided to make one person happy every month, that’s 12 people a year. If you chose to make somebody happy every week that’s 52 happy people a year. If you live for another 50 years, that’s 2600 happy people during the course of your life.
- Keep your body parts in a good shape:
Exercise is meant to make you feel better and enhance your ability to do your job. It helps alleviate your depression and improve your memory. But be careful of exercising so hard and continuously pushing your physical limits. Your body parts are not all replaceable, and they come with a limited lifetime warranty so don’t overuse them. Yes, science has come up with many human spare parts, but nothing works like the genuine ones.
- Smile during adversity:
You use fewer facial muscles when you smile compared to when you frown. A smile will change the situation and people’s behavior. Those who can smile can change the world. If you can smile during hardship, you may be able to change the situation because you chose not to surrender to the state forced on you. A smile will make you calmer and think deeper. It is also an attractive expression that will draw people to you.
One day a smiley teenage boy had an accident and went to the hospital with a deep cut on his face. The doctor asked him to stop smiling so she can pull the edges of the cut together to stitch them.
“You’ll find that life is still worthwhile if you just smile.” Charles Chaplin.
- Keep the thing between your ears buzzing:
In other words stay busy. Don’t let your brain wander doing nothing. Keep it engaged with new ideas with a plan or even with hard routine. Create stuff like any kind of art, socialize, serve others, research, and indulge in a hobby. Most bad habits are born during your spare time. That's what the brain is good at doing when you’re not looking, like addiction to substances, sad thoughts, and depression. People who are always busy are mentally healthier and happier than the ones with spare time.
