A daily helping of bio-live yogurt or sauerkraut could lower high blood pressure and cut the risk of a stroke or heart attack - even if you have a salty diet



Eating yogurt high in ‘good bacteria’ could help lower high blood pressure, according to new research.
In a scientific first, researchers have discovered diets high in salt are killing off beneficial bacteria in our guts.
Without these ‘friendly’ microbes, our bodies start producing cells that increase inflammation – making our blood vessels narrower, which puts people at risk of suffering a stroke or heart attack. 


But the germs in the gut that are killed off by high-salt diets could be replaced by a dose of ‘good bacteria’ in a pro-biotic yogurt drink, scientists said.
Experiments on humans and mice fed the unhealthy diet found the treatment reduced inflammation-triggering cells that cause high blood pressure.
Yet, experts warn further studies are required before probiotics can reliably be linked to reduced blood pressure. 
Professor David Relman from Stanford University in California, said: ‘Should hypertension be added to the list of conditions promoted by the gut microbiota? Future studies will no doubt tell.'


Yogurt therapies could tackle high blood pressure
Probiotics are commonly found in yogurts as well as fermented products such as sauerkraut.
The American and German team warned it was not a licence for people to consume as much salt as they like as long as they ate yogurt.
But the breakthrough could lead to yogurt-based therapies to tackle high blood pressure, or hypertension, that affects one-in-four Britons. A diet high in salt is a major risk factor.
Adults in the UK eat about 8.1g of salt a day - well above the recommendation of no more than 6g.
Salt drives bacteria in the gut that cause hypertension 
Professor Eric Alm, a biological engineer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said: ‘I think certainly there’s some promise in developing probiotics that could be targeted to possibly fixing some of the effects of a high-salt diet.
‘But people shouldn’t think they can eat fast food and then pop a probiotic and it will be cancelled out.’

Professor Alm and colleagues showed a high-salt diet shrank the population of a certain type of beneficial gut bacteria called Lactobacillus murinus.
As a result pro-inflammatory cells of the immune system known as Th-17 - which have been linked with high blood pressure - grew in number.
In the study of healthy humans adding 6 grams of table salt to their daily diet for a fortnight reduced the lactobacillus bacteria in their gut.
Their blood pressure went up - along with their counts of Th-17 cells.

But when the participants - all male and aged 18 to 50 - were given a commercially available probiotic for a week before going on the high-salt diet their gut lactobacillus levels and blood pressure remained normal.
This followed similar results in mice. For two weeks table salt made up 4 percent of their diet - eight times more than normal.
This led to a drop in lactobacillus, more of the troublesome Th-17 cells - and a rise in blood pressure.
But when they were given a probiotic containing Lactobacillus murinus the inflammatory cells went down and hypertension was reduced.
It is still unclear exactly how Th-17 cells contribute to the development of high blood pressure and other ill effects of a high-salt diet.


'Profound potential for global health benefits'
Professor Alm said: ‘We’re learning the immune system exerts a lot of control on the body, above and beyond what we generally think of as immunity. The mechanisms by which it exerts that control are still being unravelled.’
It is hoped the findings published in Nature will shed more light on the association between a high-salt diet and disease.
Prof Alm said: ‘If you can find that smoking gun and uncover the complete molecular details of what’s going on you may make it more likely that people adhere to a healthy diet.’
Scientists have long known a high-salt diet can lead to cardiovascular disease. As it accumulates in the bloodstream the body retains more fluid to dilute it.
It means the heart and blood vessels have to work harder to pump the extra volume of water.
This can stiffen the blood vessels - potentially leading to high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.
Recent evidence has also implicated the body’s immune system in some of the effects of a high-salt diet.
Professor David Relman, of Stanford University in California, reviewed the findings or the journal and said they have ‘profound potential.’
He said: ‘Should hypertension be added to the list of conditions promoted by the gut microbiota? Future studies will no doubt tell.
‘If this connection is real, one might predict - because of other variable factors - that the effects will be modest and restricted to a subset of individuals.
‘Nonetheless, even modest effects are more than worthy of further study, because of the profound potential for global health benefits.’
A shocking 16 million people in the UK suffer from high blood pressure - the biggest risk factor for stroke and heart attacks - with over half unaware they have the condition.

Yoghurt and LDL

Yoghurt fans have yet another reason to tuck in to a pot - the dairy snack is good for the heart.

Researchers found two daily doses of a probiotic lowered key cholesterol-bearing molecules in the blood as well as "bad" and total cholesterol.

Probiotics are live micro-organisms - naturally occurring bacteria in the gut - thought to have beneficial effects. Common sources are yoghurt or dietary supplements. 

In previous studies, a formulation of the bacteria, known as Lactobacillus reuteri NCIMB 30242, has lowered blood levels of LDL or "bad" cholesterol.

Study lead author Doctor Mitchell Jones, from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, said researchers are increasingly looking at the role probiotics can play a in treating chronic diseases such as heart disease.

The researchers investigated whether the same probiotic could lower LDL and reduce blood levels of cholesterol esters - molecules of cholesterol attached to fatty acids. This combination accounts for most total blood cholesterol and has been tied to cardiovascular disease risk.

They tracked cholesterol esters bound to saturated fat, which have been linked to dangerous arterial plaque build-up and occur at higher levels in coronary artery disease patients.

The study involved 127 adults with high cholesterol. About half the participants took L. reuteri NCIMB 30242 twice a day, while the rest were given placebo capsules.

Those taking the probiotic had LDL levels 11.6 per cent lower than those on placebo after nine weeks. Cholesterol esters were also reduced by 6.3 per cent and cholesterol ester saturated fatty acids by 8.8 per cent, compared with the placebo group.

Dr Jones said for the first time the research shows that the probiotic formulation can reduce cholesterol esters 'and in particular reduce the cholesterol esters associated with 'bad' saturated fatty acids in the blood.' 

And people taking the probiotic had total cholesterol reduced by 9.1 per cent. HDL 'good' cholesterol and blood triglycerides, a dangerous form of fat in the blood, were unchanged.

Scientists have proposed that Lactobacillus bacteria alone may impact cholesterol levels in several ways, including breaking apart molecules known as bile salts. L. reuteri NCIMB 30242 was fermented and formulated to optimisze its effect on cholesterol and bile salts.

Based on correlations between LDL reduction and bile measurements in the gut, the study results suggest the probiotic broke up bile salts, leading to reduced cholesterol absorption in the gut and less LDL.

The probiotic worked at doses of just 200 milligrams a day, far lower than those for soluble fibre or other natural products used to reduce cholesterol.

Dr Jones, co-founder and chief science officer of Micropharma - the company that formulated the probiotic, added: 'Most dietary cholesterol management products require consumption between two to 25 grams a day.'

He said patients appear to tolerate the probiotic well and the probiotic strain L. reuteri has a long history of safe use.

Because of the small number of patients involved in the study, researchers aren't sure if the impact of the probiotic differs between men and women or among ethnic groups.
The findings were presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions.

Yoghurt and cholesterol

Yogurt has become a go-to snack for many people because it contains beneficial probiotics, is a great source of protein and vitamins, is low in sugar, and keeps us full. But can it also help lower your levels of “bad” cholesterol?

Can yogurt lower cholesterol?

Several studies have examined the effect of eating yogurt on cholesterol levels.
Fruit Counts
If you’re watching your sugar intake, steer clear of fruit-flavored yogurt. Even in nonfat Greek yogurt, fruit flavorings more than triple the sugar content.
2013 study linked yogurt consumption to healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels. In the study, yogurt eaters seemed to have a better metabolic profile than those who didn’t eat yogurt. This means they had lower body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, as well as lower levels of triglycerides, fasting glucose and insulin, and blood pressure. They also showed higher levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL), or “good” cholesterol.
Other research has linked yogurt’s ability to lower cholesterol to its probiotic content, such as a British study’s finding that two daily doses of a probiotic lowered key cholesterol-bearing molecules in the blood, as well as levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad” cholesterol. The study was not able to determine if the positive effects were due to the probiotics themselves or the yogurt itself, or a combination of both.

Know your yogurt

Though these findings related to yogurt’s ability to lower cholesterol are by no means definitive, there are no doubt some other health benefits to eating yogurt. It’s a great source of healthy probiotics, vital nutrients and vitamins, and muscle-building protein.
First, though, it’s important to understand the differences in types of yogurt. Some are laden with sugar, and that’s definitely not good for us. While some people insist that full-fat yogurt is best, there are varieties with no fat or 2 percent fat (fat can affect cholesterol levels, too).
A single-serving cup of plain yogurt made with whole milk contains:
  • 104 calories
  • 7.9 grams of sugar
  • 5.5 grams of fat
Throw in some fruit flavors, and you’re looking at:
  • 194 calories
  • 19.4 grams of sugar
  • 5.7 grams of fat
By contrast, the same serving of plain nonfat Greek yogurt contains:
  • 100 calories
  • 5.5 grams of sugar
  • 0.7 grams of fat
Note that the sugar in the plain yogurts comes from lactose, the sugar naturally found in milk. Compare this to the fruit yogurt, which contains around 12 grams of added sugar, excluding natural milk sugar. That is a full 3 teaspoons worth of sugar added to that serving of yogurt! Which yogurt is right for you? Anything that looks too sweet to be true may be more of a dessert treat than a nutritional meal or snack.
According Cleveland Clinic, plain nonfat yogurt is the healthiest choice, whether it is original or Greek style. Greek yogurt does contain more protein, which can keep you feeling fuller for longer, but both types of yogurt have great protein, probiotic, and calcium content.
Fruit-on-the-bottom yogurts, on the other hand, tend to include extra calories and often contain more than three times the amount of added sugar as plain varieties.

A healthier yogurt?

Instead of purchasing flavored yogurts that may have excessive sugar added to them, many people have found interesting ways to flavor up plain varieties of yogurt. Add fresh fruit, dried fruit, or a small amount of another sweetener. Even if you add a sugar sweetener, such as honey or agave nectar, you most likely will not add as much as they do when manufacturing the yogurt. There are also yogurt drinks, which are like smoothies, and offer a different way to consume yogurt. Again, pay attention to the sugar content.Whether yogurt can actually lower cholesterol may not be clear, but yogurt undoubtedly has numerous health benefits.
