Let us look at the first sentence.
Intense cardio training. This burns more calories than not doing it.
Diet did not change.
Therefore weight MUST have been lost unless muscle increased. Let's say muscle increased and that by complete coincidence matched - in terms of weight - the calories burnt.
Let's look at the second group.
Calories were burnt but were replaced by eating more. OK that's believable but why after eight weeks did they not build any muscle mass at all. If they did, taking into account the first sentence, their weight would have risen.
