- Wake up early.
Your mind is the clearest in the morning when you wake up, it hasn’t been bogged down by the activities of daily life yet and you don’t have decision fatigue yet. The allows you to think clearly on a larger scale about your life. Doing this every day will help you to live actively and steer your life towards a direction that you want. Those who don’t know where they’re going end up nowhere.
- Think about what you want.
During your time in the morning, think about what you want to accomplish in your life. Assuming we all have about 100 years to live, how much of that is already gone? 20%? 40? It puts life into perspective when you realize you’ve already lived most of your healthy years away, it can be kind of depressing but it makes you realize how precious each day is. Have you ever looked at the clock at 3:45 and thought to yourself “I wish it was 5:00 already. ” and then you just kinda zone out until you leave work?
Never wish time away, you’ll never get it back.
Beyond that, think about why you even want a job, what purpose does it serve? Does it make you happy? Do you feel fulfilled in this field? Are you doing it just for the money? Is that okay? What do you need the money for? Retirement? When do you want to retire? Why do you want to retire?
- Make a plan.
Once you decide what kind of life you want to live or , you’ll have to make an actionable plan to get there. If you want to quit a job you hate then write down “Apply to 5 jobs every day” and do it. Rework and rewrite your plan every day and do a little bit every day to get closer to your goals. With a plan, dreams become goals and goals are achievable.
- Read or listen more.
Read articles, books, newspapers, anything you can get your hands on. Consume the knowledge and learnings of people who have failed and succeeded before you. Listen to podcasts and book in the car instead of the radio. Be careful of what type of media you consume, are you consuming it to pass the time or to learn something to further your goals? I’m not saying don’t relax once in a while but don’t spend every day doing nothing. You become what you consume.
- Find not like-minded people.
Find people that you hate, people who you think are so beneath you or above you or different or weird or crazy and especially wrong, find people who you think are stupidly wrong and talk to them. What life experiences have led them to see the same information that you see and allowed them to draw a different conclusion? They’re not stupid so don’t be condescending. If you were born in their place, is it possible you may think the same thing? Don’t try to convince people, allow people to convince you, try to believe what they believe, and after you’ve tested all your beliefs you’ll know which ones are truer. But don’t stop testing them. Yes, have like-minded friends but also have more non like-minded friends. There’s nothing life changing about yes men and living in an echo chamber.

Most importantly, go do. You’re not going to change your life by browsing Quora, you’re going to change your life by living it. Stop everything you’re doing for next few minutes, seriously, stop it. Think about this: What do you want?
