Alcohol and strokes

If you have had a stroke caused by a clot blocking a blood vessel, small amounts of alcohol can be beneficial. Alcohol has a blood thinning effect.

If your stroke was due to a bleed, alcohol may increase the risk of a further bleed.

Men should not have more than 2 to 3 units of alcohol per day. (21 per week)

Your alcohol intake per week was ………. units

Women should not have more than 1 to 2 units of alcohol per day. (14 per week)

Drinking more than these recommended amounts raises blood pressure, which is one of the main causes of strokes. A PINT OF BEER (at 5% vol ) = 2.8 units of alcohol

A STANDARD GLASS OF WINE (at 13% vol) = 2.3 units of alcohol

A 25ML MEASURE OF SPIRITS = 1 unit of alcohol

You should aim to have at least 2 alcohol free days in a week.

Too much alcohol will make control of Warfarin difficult and may put you at risk of strokes caused by bleeds in the brain!
